KODOMO NO HI
Every year on May 5th, families in Japan celebrate Kodomo no Hi, or ‘Children’s Day’—a day devoted to honouring children’s happiness, growth, and individuality. Originally split between Boys' Day in May and Girls' Day in March, the two were merged into one celebration in 1948. The children dress up nicely, often in kimonos, and the family play together in parks around the Emperor Palace. Colourful carp-shaped streamers, known as Koinobori, are flown to symbolise strength and perseverance—each fish representing a family member.
At Sticks'n'Sushi, we honour this tradition each year on May 5th by offering a 'create your own Koinobori' activity for every child dining in our restaurants. It’s a joyful moment for families to come together and celebrate the spirit of the day through creativity, connection, and a touch of Japanese tradition.
